What Is Hojicha?
Hojicha is a unique Japanese green tea made from roasted leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant. Unlike matcha, hojicha is not shade-grown — instead, the tea leaves are carefully harvested, steamed to stop oxidation, and then gently roasted at high temperatures. This roasting process transforms the leaves, reducing bitterness and caffeine while creating hojicha’s signature warm, nutty flavour and rich brown colour.
Once roasted, the leaves are finely ground into a smooth powder. When whisked into hot water or milk, hojicha creates a comforting, low-caffeine drink with notes of toasted nuts and caramel — perfect for slower moments, afternoons, or evenings.
